Trip details Trip map
Metz: Nice city for a short stop. Walk along the river, eat out.
Battlefields of Verdun: Absolutely worth seeing.
Fecamp: The Benedictine distillery is not too bad f you have nothing else to do.
Etretat: We expected lonely beaches, but this one is packed with tourists. Don't go there, find some more remote place.
Rouen: Just another medieval city. We just slept overnight there.
Monet's house in Giverny and the American Art museum: The Monet's house is a bit packed with tourists, and the garden is obviously not what he saw when he was here. But it has a nice collection of original Japanese graphics. The American Art museum is quite interesting. Worth a half-day visit.
Bayeux: Small medieval town, worth using as overnight pit-stop. There is an old tapestry museum, but we didn't visit it.
Arromanches: the D-Day museum Absolutely worth seeing, Also a very nice beach for barefoot walk in the waves.
Juno Beach and the Canadian museum of WWII, Courseulles-sur-Mer: Must-see as well. A different view to the war. Also the beach is clean and empty - just perfect for a walk.
le Mont St-Michel: Completely packed with tourists. Beautiful from outside, but driving there, parking, and walking in the crowd is not worth it. The sand beach on low tide is funny to walk around.
Quiberon: the town itself is just another sea resort, packed with middle class tourists. But the Western coast of the peninsula (Cote Savage) is absolutely beautiful. Worth spending a day, walking and hiking.
The Megaliths in Carnac: really stunning thing. Especially if you start with the part that is furthest from the tourist center -- there you meet almost no-one, and the whole site is yours.
La Table des Marées restaurant, Auray, the only restaurant that we visited twice in a row. Excellent choice of creative, modern cuisine.
Cheverny castle: tons of 17th Century furniture, but all in all not very impressive.
Chambord castle: It's huge. Worth seeing.
Also big thanks to Michelin for the restaurant tips. Absolutely must-have for those wanting to explore the French cuisine.
